Painful Lumbosacral Radiculopathy (PLSR), commonly called sciatica, is caused by a compressed nerve and inflammation in the lower back that results in radiating leg pain that ranges from a mild ache to a burning or shocking pain.
As many as 40% of people will experience PLSR in their lifetime: up to 5% of the population annually. Men commonly experience it in their 40s, and women in their 50s and 60s. It can have a mild to significant impact on quality of life.
Current therapies include anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids, antidepressants, anti-seizure meds, opioids, physical therapy, and stretching. Surgery may be required but is reserved for worst-case scenarios.
